MySpace Ventures into Films
Myspace blew up the music scene right... well, now its time to tackle movies!
What MySpace did for the indie music scene, it is set to do for indie filmmakers. News Corp’s Netco has launched a new addition to MySpace called MySpace Films, giving indie filmmakers a platform to post animation, short films and other videos alongside their profiles.
The first push to promote the new film channel will occur at the Monday kickoff of the Sundance Film Festival. The site will only feature a few films to start off with, but if MySpace Music is a testament to what’s possible—they currently have 600,000 bands using the site—the Films unit could reap the same rewards.
As with their music members, MySpace will be highlighting films on the main page and throughout the site. As a MySpace spokesperson tells Variety, “We are enabling independent filmmakers to have the same exposure and marketing tools as musicians have.”
