College Ban for Myspace.com & High School students suspended

Well, I would be lying if I said I didnt see this one coming. Im suprised there isnt more talk on MySpace.com being banned from schools, universities, and employers networks.

My company for instance has discussed blocking the site all together from its network, and is certainly frowning on employees 'MySpacing'.

But now we're seeing the first news of Banning the site.

Due to the excessive use of MySpace.com in the library and computer labs, Fullerton College might ban the Web site if the problem persists.

Although the library staff continues to inform students that the computers are for academic use only, the issue has become serious due to the fact that many students can’t log on to do academic work.

“It wasn’t a big deal until students started to complain,” said Mike Fitzsimmons, head reference

librarian. “It’s gotten so bad that other students have had to wait in line to do homework while others access MySpace.”

Every 30 minutes, the librarians announce that the computers are for research and not personal use, but a majority of students still visit the Web site despite library policy.

The issue has been taken to the A.S. as well as John Ayala, library dean.

The A.S. has come up with alternative methods before implementing a ban across campus.

One idea was to have Myspace banned only in the library, but Nilo Niccolai, the head of Academic Computing Technology, prefers it to be banned campus wide.

“Eliminating it is our last option,” said Victoria Rizo, A.S. Student Trustee. “We are going to take steps informing others about it before pulling the plug.”

Edward Scott, ICC President, suggested posting flyers in public areas to spread the word.

“It’s easy to ignore signs in the library,” Edward said. “If students see it around campus then it could be easy to strike up a conversation and more people would be informed.”

A.S. senators are also informing other students in their classes about the issue in hopes that word of the potential ban will spread.

The decision is to have specific signs posted in the library before taking this issue to the next level. The new signs will address MySpace instead of stating “For academic use only.” However, if students continue to ignore the rules,MySpace.com will be blocked throughout the campus.

There's been plenty of talk about Myspace in schools, but this is probably the first real case of banning the stie. As for suspension, well come on... how stupid are you going to be to place things you know you shouldnt be doing in a public forum... come'on!

Students at West Valley High School are being suspended and in some cases being sent to alcohol assessments for misbehaving on-line.

Now thats funny... "Misbehaving On-Line"

I bet your laughing right now... arent you.... I knew it!

ok.. ok.. back on topic:

Arthur Molina's daughter is a cheerleader. She was suspended for misbehaving on-line. Molina says parents should discipline their child outside of school, not the district. The district took action against his daughter because she's an athlete. School principal Jean Seibert says students need to follow school code. Parents argue students are being robbed of their freedom of speech.

Are there really rules for "Online Behavior"?

PLEASE PLEASE.... let me know.

When I was in High School, um..
There were no Rules for behaving online.
Wasnt the Internet made for porn? Maybe we were wrong all along, it was made for "Misbehaving Online"
