New Warnings About The Dangers Of Internet Dating

Its been all over the news, is myspace getting a bad rap? Is Myspace.com unsafe?
First, I would like to say that this crap has been around since the dawn of AOL!

Three days after a Baltimore woman is discovered murdered after she met a date on the popular website Myspace.com, police continue to give warnings about the dangers of Internet dating.

Baltimore County Police say UMBC student John Christopher Gaumer, 22, admitted to killing Josie Phyllis Brown after taking her on a date Dec. 28.

Brown, of the 3500-block of Buena Vista Lane, was reported missing last month in Baltimore City. Her body was found Tuesday night off a highway ramp in Arbutus.

Many college students tell Eyewitness News internet dating is common on campuses.

"It's no more dangerous than meeting people at a bar," UMBC student Doug Miller tells WJZ's Kathryn Brown.

Maryland State Police tell Eyewitness News the danger of internet dating lies in the dater's false sense of security, the feeling they already know the prospect when, in fact, they really don't.

"Folks tend to be more trusting in this virtual world than in the real world," Det. Sgt. Robert Smolek says.

Police say internet users can not be too careful when it comes to displaying personal information on the world wide web. Police advise users who participate in Internet dating to do the following:

- Stick with an anonymous email address
- Use a telephone number away from home
- When meeting online buddies in person, do it in a public place
- Notify friends of all plans

    Heloo Tom
im doing a HUGE disscussion/debate on "Con Myspace" for my school and i think that what you did was the BEST idea ever and im sure u already KNOW that but anyways.......

your recent myspace posts are a GREAT idea for those who are PRO MYSPACE yeah like teachers and others in my school

but hi .... what u did helps us express ourselves.. and i had to "remove" some pictures i had from mine and was accussed of hazing and bullying..... wait. waht??

THE SCHOOL WANTS TO "BAN" it and thats stupid because hi kids dont even know our rules with the internet and if they use it incorrectly then thats their loss........

i just feel that during lunch and study hall
SOME dont even have computers at home
    -contact of people
    -bands getting more glances..

u know what im saying i doubt u READ this far and if u did wow thats just insane but im really cool

    um im done now bye!

Some good points there for sure, however I'd have to say that school probably isnt the best place to be on myspace. I mean, school is for education and goofing around on the internet probably isnt the best use of time for education.

It sucks for sure that some dont have the net at home, but to use your school systems resources for goofin off isnt soo good.

On a lighter note, I heard that some universities are actually using some sites like these (ie facebook) to press charges on students and fraternities for hazing and underage drinking......

Taking that to the next level huh?
