MySpace plans to launch an overhaul to its MySpace Video service tomorrow, complete with a new name, MySpace TV and separate URL. MySpace is currently the number two video host in the U.S, trailing YouTube by about 8 million viewers a month.

According to the New York Times, the new MySpace TV will be available at a separate domain so that those without a MySpace account can still access video from the site’s users.

However MySpace TV is also said to be moving away from user generated content to focus more on professionally created content. For all the hype surrounding user-generated content, it’s still the professional clips that bring in the advertising dollars.

MySpace TV is not just a name though, the Times says that each MySpace member page will “link to a separate MySpace TV channel, which will display the videos the user has uploaded.”

As with the rest of MySpace, users will be able to unleash their hideous design choices on the web at large — customizing the page as it’s known in the trade.

MySpace also plans to launch an online video editing service later this year to compete with YouTube’s Remixer offering.
While it was pretty much the same garbage thats been re-hased about these two sites one thing did catch my attention. It was talking about how Facebook has a cleaner approach then myspace, and zoned right in on how myspace lets you add just about anything to your 'profile'. Then they went into the whole music codes on myspace, and how you go to someones myspace page and suddenly you are slammed with random videos playing and all kinds of music and other crap.

This little work-around will allow you to download most music files.

Hacking myspace to download music has long been a fun challenge. Previously authors have described two other methods for grabbing music files off of myspace. Both of these methods have since been patched by myspace, as this one might be too by the time you get here.

Here is the newest hack called MySpace MP3 Gopher.
This works for files that have not been marked for download as well.

You may download the files from here. It doesn't need installation.

Then input the FriendID from the profile you want to get the music.
Often the quickest way to do it is just to mouse over one of the profile links:

Click Get Song Listing

Double-click the file you want

Click Download

Wait for the file.

Or, you could just listen to them through the browser!

Yet another simple URL modification makes private profile information available
Two very simple methods that allowed anyone to view comments and photos stored in private Myspace profiles. These security holes were available by a simple modification of the URL used to access Myspace. The story of these security holes were posted on digg.com, and very quickly spread across the Internet. Once public, Myspace reacted swiftly and closed these two holes within 24 hours. But as soon as those security breaches were addressed by Myspace, more were popping up, and being closed by Myspace, like a lame game of whack-a-mole.

This morning (9/2/06) I awoke to find the following URL in my Inbox (sent anonymously). It is claimed that this URL allows anyone to view videos that have been uploaded to private Myspace profiles.

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.showvids&friendid=XXXXXXX

*insert the Myspace friendID at the end in place of the XXXXX

Myspace videos are not in strong demand

I'm sure the demand to view videos uploaded to private Myspace profiles is nowhere near as high as the demand to view private comments and photos. But the idea that this type of simple URL modification can still give anyone access to information that is intended by Myspace to be "private" should make us all think twice about posting anything on the internet that you would not be comfortable with the whole world seeing.

December 6, 2006 BY ANICK JESDANUNNEW YORK -- The popular online hangout MySpace said Tuesday it will develop technologies to help block convicted sex offenders, the site's latest attempt to address complaints about sexual predators and other dangers to teens.

MySpace is partnering with Sentinel Tech Holding Corp. to build and deploy within 30 days a database that will contain the names and physical descriptions of convicted sex offenders in the United States. An automated system will search for matches between the database and MySpace user profiles. Employees will then delete any profiles that match.

Parents, school administrators and law-enforcement authorities have grown increasingly worried that teens are at risk on MySpace and other social-networking sites, which provide tools for messaging, sharing photos and creating personal pages.

About 12 percent of all MySpace's visitors in October were under 18, according to comScore Media Metrix. The tracking company counts Americans who visit the site at least once in a given month, so the proportion of teens may actually be higher based on time spent.

The aim of such sites is for users to expand their circles of friends – and critics say those circles sometimes come to include sexual predators. Wired News said a recent investigation turned up hundreds of profiles for convicted sex offenders.

Forty-six states now maintain registries containing more than 550,000 convicted sex offenders, each with its own rules on what information the public may obtain, as well as when and what can be done with it.

"How do you analyze those different databases and analyze them against our, right now, 135 million user profiles?" said Hemanshu Nigam, MySpace's chief security officer. "We came to the conclusion (that) there was absolutely no real way to do this in a real-time, scalable fashion."

Instead, Sentinel will build a search tool for MySpace using data from aggregators such as LexisNexis Inc.'s Seisint unit, said John Cardillo, the Miami-based company's chief executive. The database, to be updated monthly, will include details such as names, age, hair color, height, scars and tattoos.

The News Corp. site, however, won't be using Sentinel's technology to verify the ages and identities of users to ensure they're not adults posing as teens – a change urged by many lawmakers and law-enforcement officials.

Cardillo said his service would be ineffective for such a purpose given the site's large teen population. Children don't have public records the same way adults do, he said, so the technology can't rule out whether an adult is posing as a teen online.

"What we'd rather do at this point is solve problems we know we can solve," Cardillo said.

Image-recognition software and other techniques are being considered to identify sex offenders who do not use their real names. In the meantime, Cardillo said, the database technology won't catch everyone but "will be highly effective." He declined to elaborate or provide any quantifiable targets.

Nigam said MySpace would consider making the database, to be called Sentinel Safe, available to rivals.

Parry Aftab, executive director of WiredSafety.org, credited MySpace for trying but said a database was no panacea.

"People who are registered sexual offenders will just not be themselves now (and) the people who they really need to protect kids from in most cases are not (convicted) sexual offenders," she said. "They are people who haven't been caught yet. It's a great PR (public relations) move but frankly I don't think it's going to make anyone safer."

In a statement, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal dismissed the database as ineffective without age and identify verification.

But Nigam said he sees the database as part of a larger strategy that includes education and partnerships with law enforcement. He also said governments ought to require sex offenders to register e-mails they use to help sites like his screen profiles.

"We have to do everything we can in every different angle," he said.

In June, MySpace adopted new restrictions on how adults may contact the site's younger users and request to view their full profiles, which contain hobbies, schools and additional personal details. That, too, was criticized as ineffective because adults may simply register as teens to skirt the restrictions.

Aftab warned parents not to reduce oversight of their kids.

"They see this, they may misunderstand and think it will keep sex offenders off the site," she said. "The fact that it sounds more effective than it really is, that's a big problem."

According to News.com, MySpace.com is demanding that Apple change its Quicktime player software to address an issue that occurred recently when the popular social networking website was attacked by a phishing/worm attack that used embedded Quicktime movies to propagate.

The worm exploits a common type of Web vulnerability called a cross-site scripting flaw in the site along with a feature called HREF track in QuickTime that has legitimate uses but can also be abused, experts said.

Nevertheless, Apple is obliging.

Apple is working on a QuickTime fix, but has a temporary solution available Tuesday, company spokeswoman Lynn Fox said in an e-mail.

"Recently we learned about an issue that exploits a feature in QuickTime used to target MySpace users. We have devised a way to disable this QuickTime feature for those who use Internet Explorer. We are working on a broader solution for all other users as well," Fox said in the e-mail.

Apple said it has provided MySpace with the temporary fix. The computer company said it would be up to the social-networking site to offer it to users. MySpace has not responded to an inquiry from CNET News.com as to when the temporary solution would be available to users.

It remains unclear how the temporary solution will be distributed. Also, while MySpace had temporarily blocked the web links in question while waiting for Apple's response, MacRumors is unaware of any attempts by the company to address the root cross-scripting vulnerability that may still be potentially be exploited via other yet-unknown means.

Later last night, the folks at MySpace redeemed themselves by returning the URL to its rightful owner. The band received a message from Tom, saying, "I heard about what happened with your URL. I gave it back to ya...Sorry about that! As we grow in size, sometimes people make decisions I don't know about. This was obviously the wrong decision. The Bones URL is yours once again."

Bones member Scott Campbell said, "We're shocked!! And grateful. Not only did Myspace give us back the www.myspace.com/bones URL, but we received a huge outpouring of moral support from the whole indie rock community over this. It went from being a really horrible experience, to really amazing, and we just want to thank everyone."
